Residents and community leaders in Prince Albert aren’t the only ones excited about the possibilities once the University of Saskatchewan expands to the forest centre building downtown.

Various colleges within the university are also excited about the change, and are anticipating the expansion will bring more opportunities for research and collaboration in a number of fields. U of S officials said at an earlier this week in Prince Albert. Dr. Phil Woods agrees the new campus in the city’s downtown core will be a chance for more students to learn and build their careers closer to home.

Woods is the acting dean with the U of S College of Nursing and said the chance to study near where you live has always been a priority for the school.

“Our presence has been here for a number of years, and we’re excited to move to this new facility in a couple of years,” Woods said. “I think there’s great opportunities as a hub to bring students here, and also to allow collaborations to go further up north.”

The U of S College of Nursing offered 50 seats for undergraduate students this year in Prince Albert, 15 between La Ronge and Île-à-la-Crosse, with the remaining 280 in Saskatoon, Regina, and Yorkton.

Woods said students learn using a variety of resources, including in-person and through video link. The new U of S campus in Prince Albert will allow for more collaboration on community research projects as well.

Faculty members with the College of Nursing are already working with community partners in Prince Albert on issues around homelessness, Woods added. The College of Nursing has been offering programs in Prince Albert for the last 15 years.

“Our presence has been here for a number of years,” Woods said. “We’ve used that learn where you live [philosophy] for a number of years … learn in your own community and practice there too.”

Officials with the U of S hosted a reception in Prince Albert earlier this week to brief the public on plans for the new downtown campus. Renovations on the forest centre are scheduled to start in the spring, with the new campus expected to open in the fall of 2020.
