Local girl helps sweeten the holiday season for less fortunate

A grade 3 student at Queen Mary School made it her Christmas wish this year to give back to the city’s less fortunate, even offering the money she received from the tooth fairy and a bake sale.

Summer Thomas, 8, raised $142 through sugar cookies she made and sold at the La Fille De Madeleine Christmas Sale. Summer explained to paNOW, why she wanted to help.

“Because I felt bad and they might be freezing,” she said.

Prior to the sale, Summer had lost a tooth and received $7 from the tooth fairy which she told her mother she wanted to use to buy items for the homeless. When her mother explained to her $7 wasn’t going to help the homeless too much, Summer decided to sell the cookies.

In addition to the money Summer raised, the students at Queen Mary school pitched in and some of the funds raised by the Student Council were donated to help buy socks and mitts. Vice-Principal Kari Korczak said she was touched by Summer’s generosity.

“Summer came up with this on her own, we’ve never done something like this specificly,” she said.

Korczak added the school does do a lot fundraising throughout the year, and helps various charities including the Christmas hamper program. Korzak said the school is fortunate to have very caring families.

“We actually get so much donated we have to have truckloads bring it to the food bank from our students,” she said.

Over the next week, Summer and her mother plan to drop off the clothing items at the city’s shelters.
