Mintos fall 5-2 to Contacts

Dec 11, 2018 | 8:27 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos were outdueled in the middle of the game, falling to the Saskatoon Contacts (14-10) by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday at the Art Hauser Centre.

With the loss, the Mintos fall below .500 (12-13-0-1). They have one victory in their last seven contests.

Gabe Klassen opened the scoring with a highlight reel goal just three minutes into the contest.

It was a one-on-three rush, but Klassen was able to slither through all three, get the puck on his forehand and pick the top, glove-side corner. As a 15-year-old rookie, Klassen now has 17 goals and a Minto-leading 31 points on the year.

That turned out to be the lone-goal of the first period, but the Contacts were able to respond in the second. They scored three straight goals to have a 3-1 lead by the opening minute of the third period.

Riley Girod crashed the net to have a rebound ricochet off him for the Contacts’ first goal. Caleb Cherry then somehow found the goal while shooting from the Mintos’ goalline. Jaeden Mercier.

Dawson Springer continues to score for the Mintos. His power play high-slot wrister got the Mintos to within one goal with 9:56 left in the game. He now has the outright lead for goals among all Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League players, with 19 markers in 26 games.

But that’s as close as the Mintos would come. Raiders prospect Davin Griffin sealed the deal himself with a breakaway goal with 4:51 left in the period, before an empty net goal with over a minute left.

The Mintos were extremely short staffed. Cohner Saleski is still out with an ankle injury. Ethan Ironside is sitting out during his six-game ban. Alex Von Sprecken and Turner McMillen were also both unavailable for Tuesday’s game.

The Mintos’ next game is at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday against the Yorkton Maulers.
