City looking at mandatory recycling for businesses, multi-unit dwellings

City staff are looking at options around a mandatory recycling program for businesses and multi-unit dwellings with more than four units in Prince Albert and are seeking feedback on the issue.

A meeting was planned for Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss a proposed amendment to the current Waste Collection and Disposal Bylaw. Kiley Bear, the city’s communications manager, said the city wants to increase recycling rates in Prince Albert and a mandatory program is one of the options under review.

Currently, the city’s recycling program is optional for local businesses and owners of multi-unit dwellings.

“At this point, it’s proposed, and so we’re meeting with the businesses to get their feedback on the proposal and how it might impact them,” Bear said.

Recycling rates are currently well below the city’s target at just 24 per cent. City administrators hope to boost that number to 55 or 60 per cent by 2025.

Bear said options around how many recycling bins a business might need, the potential costs and the amount of time needed to implement the program are all on the table right now. City staff members are asking business owners to give their feedback in an online survey on its website as well.

“There’s really nothing set about implementation yet,” Bear added. “We’re still just at the exploration phase of this.”

The city’s current multi-product recycling program has been running since 2012, including plastic, tin cans, paper and cardboard. The online survey will remain open until Dec. 11.
