Christmas season heating up

Nov 30, 2018 | 10:00 AM

With everyone’s mind on shopping, decorating and merry making, the Prince Albert Fire Department is reminding residents to take a moment to keep their houses safe.

Christmas can be an especially dangerous season when it comes to house fires.

Kris Olsen with the Prince Albert Fire Department said the main source of concern is live Christmas trees.

“They (Christmas trees) become an extreme fire hazard,” said Olsen, who added it’s very important to keep all heat sources away from your tree.

“Forty percent of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical distribution or lighting equipment (that) was used improperly.”

To avoid electrical problems cords should be the proper length and not be covered or bunched.

Your tree should be well watered to ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Burning candles should be kept far away from the tree and should not be left alone while lit.

Olsen says it’s a good idea for families to have an emergency plan in place which includes an exit strategy as well as a designated meeting space in the event of a fire.

He stressed that if there is a fire, if you’re able to get out and do not re-enter the home.
