Prince Albert residents were recently honoured with awards.

One of those was Stephen Acron, who was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Silver Award. Acorn received the recognition at a ceremony in Regina recently.

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards aim to recognize young people for a number of traits and can include them getting active, building skills to get them ready for life, and work and providing public service.

To be eligible for the award the recipient must have completed a certain number of hours in each area while under the watch of an assessor.

In the case of Acorn, he was recognized with the silver award for volunteering at the hospital, being physically active, being active in the outdoors and working to develop a skill. He was also credited with taking part in a hiking journey.

Going forward Acorn said he plans to study resource and environmental law after finishing high school.

Another Prince Albert resident was also honoured with the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. Chloe Connelly received her honour for service volunteering with the Girl Guides, being physically active and working to develop a skill. For her journey Connelly canoed the Churchill River.

After receiving the award Connelly said the award program helped her to make new friends and allowed her to get to know her community.

Along with Connelly and Acorn, two other P.A. residents have also recently received recognition.

Lori Ma was awarded the Commonwealth’s Bar to Service Cross and Lauren Haubrich was awarded a Commonwealth’s Service Commendation from the Life Saving Society of Canada.

The two were given the awards to recognize their dedication and work towards the goals of the society. Both officially received their awards in Regina Friday.

Ma received the society’s service cross in recognition of her working in the aquatics division at the city for over 35 years. To receive the service cross a recipient has to have a minimum of 16 years of service.

Meanwhile Haubrich, who has been working with the City of Prince Albert since 2009, was given her commendation based on her contributions, service and achievements.

In a media release from the City of Prince Albert, recreation manager Derek Blais recognized both Ma and Haubrich. Blais as well acknowledged Acorn for his award, as Acorn is also employed by the city as a life guard.

“This Provincial and National recognition is well deserved and we are very fortunate to have such great leaders on our aquatic team,” he said.
