Clean sweep for Saskatchewan

Nov 20, 2018 | 11:29 AM

Saskatchewan was well represented this past week at the Red Deer Curling Classic, with both the men’s and women’s teams finishing on top.

Team Silvernagle, which includes Prince Abert’s Kara Thevenot, won the women’s A-final Monday, beating China’s Jie Mei 8-5.

“This is great momentum going into our last two tour events of the season and then provincials in January,” Thevenot told paNOW.

After going 6-5 during round robin play, Robyn Silvernagle faced Kelly Rocque in the quarter finals and won 9-1. Silvernagle went on to beat Japan’s Seina Nakajima 7-4 in the semi-final, before facing Mei in the final. Trailing 4-2 after four ends, the Norh Battleford based rink battled back and won 8-5. When asked what she thought led to the team’s success, Thevenot said the team never gave up.

“We tried to play a simple game and made a lot of shots. Our team dynamics is really strong and it’s clicking. Had some tough games and hung in there,” she said.

In addition to Thevenot there is one more Prince Albert connection on the team. Third Stefanie Lawton was born in Prince Albert and now lives in Saskatoon.

On the men’s side of the tournament, Saskatoon’s Kody Hartung beat Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher 7-6 in the final.

The team’s most memorable match may have been Saturday night against Jamie Koe. Koe and his team were ejected from the bonspiel over the what organizers called unsportsmanlike behaviour resulting from excessive drinking.

Ryan Fry, who played third for the team, issued a statement and apologized to fans and the event’s organizers for his behaviour.

For their winning efforts, both the Hartung and Silvernagle teams took home a $10,000 prize.
