Preparation key for safe winter travel

Are you ready for winter roads?

Icy conditions and snow will soon be a reality for many drivers. It may not be enjoyable, but there are steps you can take to avoid trouble on the roads this winter season.

Lyle Karasiuk, the Director of Affairs with Parkland Ambulance, encouraged people to carry winter survival kits and to make sure their vehicle is ready for the roads by installing winter tires.

“They make a world of difference,” Karasiuk said. “One, to improve your steering and two, to improve your braking. Those are the key factors to winter driving.”

Karasiuk said being visible helps avoid accidents.

“Make sure you stop frequently to brush your car so that you can be seen. Turn your headlights on, don’t rely on your daytime running lights,” Karasiuk said.

It is recommended to have several items in your vehicle incase of an emergency situation, including booster cables, blankets, extra winter clothing, high energy snacks, candles, first aid kit and a shovel.

Even after all the precautions are taken a driver may still find themselves stranded in bad weather.

Karasiuk advised if you find yourself in this situation, remain calm. The likelihood of incurring injury increases once you leave the confines of the vehicle.

Other tips for winter driving come from the Canadian Automobile Association. They advise to always keep your vehicle’s fuel level at half a tank and above, as well checking your tire pressure. Low tire pressure can lead to early wear on your tires.

Before heading out on the roads drivers are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline to see the current road conditions.
