Mustangs make triumphant return to Provincials

Nov 20, 2018 | 9:00 AM

The Meath Park senior boys’ volleyball team has overcome the odds, and will make their third consecutive trip to provincials this upcoming weekend.

Head coach Luke Milburn told paNOW he was very excited to see his team win silver at the 2A boys West Regional tournament at Ecole Canadienne, losing out to Kinistino in the final 2-0. Last year Meath Park finished second at Provincials, but lost four grade 12’s in June. Milburrn said he thought this year might be a re-building year.

“I was talking to some of the guys and this will be their third time there [at provincials] so they are excited. And you know my young guys, I don’t know if they quite know what to expect so it will be a good learning experience for them,” he said.

The Mustangs won both their games in the preliminary round, and would go on to beat the home team in the first round of the playoffs. Milburn said his team’s strategy for provincials will not change and he has a simple message for the boys.

“You know they have confidence in themselves and they’ve put in all this hard work to get to where they are, so [I told them] keep working and hopefully good things happen for them,” he said.

Last year Meath Park played in the 3A division but due to the number of boys registered at the school this year, were re-classified into 2A.

Other local schools qualifying for the 2A provincial tournament include Kinistino and Pinehouse Lake. In the 3A division, Birch Hills qualified for provincials after finishing first at the West Regional tournament at Maidstone. The Melfort Comets will represent at the northeast region in Melville at the 4A tournament. The Comets won silver at the 4A boys’ east regional tournament in Sturgis.
