Nov 16, 2018 | 1:19 PM

Matches are underway at École St. Mary High School for the 5A senior boys’ provincial volleyball championship.

The opening match featured the host Marauders taking on the Balgonie Greenall Griffins. The noon match drew a large crowd to the school’s gym, with both the stands and overhead track filled with students and other spectators.

In the first set-up of the best of three match, the Griffins got out to an early lead. But midway through the game, the home team stepped up their defense and began to pull away. The Marauders sealed the 25-18 win with service ace.

In the second game the Griffins were once again able to get out to a quick lead, but like the first, this lead didn’t last. The Marauders once again were able to step up their game, especially on defence. At one point the Marauders blocked three straight Griffin hits and won a rally which brought many on the St. Mary’s bench to their feet.
