Rural community deals with break-ins, thefts

Nov 2, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A recent rash of break and enters is affecting locals in a community North of Prince Albert.

According to Reeve Cheryl Bauer Hyde, The District of Lakeland, which borders the eastern edge of Prince Albert National Park, is dealing with an increase in property crime.

“We’re seeing some increased activity, again in the (break and enters) and theft of vehicles or ATVs, that type of thing,” she said.

Bauer Hyde said she didn’t have numbers, but said in the last few weeks thieves broke into a business, and a number of homes.

“Our community safety officers have increased or adjusted their patrols,” Bauer Hyde said.

Along with the community safety officers, the district is working with local RCMP and the province’s crime reduction team to deal with the problems.

“We continue to encourage people to be aware of what’s happening in their area, to secure their belongings, to if you’re not around have a neighbour or someone check on your residence,” she said.

Other security measures she recommended included making sure not to leave keys in the ignition of vehicles and making sure the keys are kept in a secure place. Bauer Hyde felt making sure property was secure was the best course of action as many of the incidents happen at night. She recommended those who have security cameras installed to inform the district office as they may be of use to investigators.

“It may not be something that’s directly related to you, but something that’s happened in the area,” she said.
