Be bear aware this fall

Oct 30, 2018 | 11:01 AM

No official reports have been filed at this time, but paNOW has heard of bear sightings in recent weeks along the Rotary Trail and in the eastern portion of the city.

Conservation officer Rich Hildebrand told paNOW that although nothing has been confirmed, it is always important to remember that bears are present around the city. Hildebrand stressed the importance of being bear aware, especially at this time of year when animals are preparing for hibernation.

“We checked with our local office this morning and they hadn’t received any calls regarding bears being sighted,” added Hildebrand. “Earlier in the month of October, we had some sightings in the Christopher Lake area and some trouble with bears getting into garbage, but nothing local.”

Hildebrand noted there is a population of bears living near Prince Albert and during this time of year they be more visible near the city.

“Bear safety is always important. We live in bear country and have to remember that,” said Hildebrand. “People should always make sure garbage and food, or pet food, is not left around, and even things like scattered birdseed from feeders can attract bears.”

Hildebrand also reminded residents who may encounter a bear to stay calm and make a wide detour while slowly backing away. Never feed or approach a bear and avoid making eye contact as it may be interpreted as a threat by the animal.

If you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation with a wild animal, Hildebrand asks you to report the incident to your local conservation office.

“Bear safety is something that is always important. Make sure to put away all your food and continue to clean up after yourselves when you’re out and about.” added Hildebrand.

Residents are also encouraged to never hike alone, and to always carry bear spray and keep pets on a leash at all times.
