Record breaking trout pulled from lake North of La Ronge

Kyle Borysiuk, of Prince Albert, didn’t expect an ice fishing trip north of La Ronge earlier this year would net him a trout so big that he now holds a world record title for the catch.

Borysiuk was ice fishing with his father and a family friend this past spring in the northern zone near Brabant Lake. He said they were only out for a couple of hours when he felt a tug on the line, indicating he caught a larger than average fish. He noted it wasn’t too hard reeling it in, adding the hardest part was getting it started through the hole and up through the ice.

“We caught a couple other nice ones before and it’s hard to tell because lake trout is so strong,” Borysiuk said. “I knew it was going to be a decent fish, but you don’t really know until you get it out of the hole.”

Coming in at 47 inches or nearly four feet, Borysiuk was surprised by the size of the fish once he got it out the ice. He didn’t tell many people about the catch for some time afterwards, but he did send a photo to a local conservation officer who notified him of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Wisconsin. The organization confirmed the trout as a freshwater catch-and-release record.

Borysiuk also wanted to stress the importance of the catch-and-release program, noting the trout he caught and let go was a female, had strong genetics and could carry much more eggs than most do. He said he has no issue with people fishing for food, but said it’s best to let the big ones go and eat the little ones. Borysiuk wouldn’t reveal which lake he caught the fish, adding it’s his little secret.

“People come from all over North American to fish here,” Borysiuk said. “I don’t think most people know what we have. It’s so overlooked by everyone that we have world-class lakes right here.”
