P.A. ready with winter roads equipment

Oct 9, 2018 | 4:00 PM

October has barely begun but the city of Prince Albert has had equipment at the ready for winter road conditions for a number of weeks already. And it was needed over the holiday weekend.

While the city didn’t experience the sort of snowfall seen to the northwest Monday, they did send crews out.

“We spent four hours sanding with three trucks this weekend,” roadways manager Brent Kennedy told paNOW. “We had four sanders ready to go three weeks ago, and last week we were out because of the iced-up bridge and overpasses.”

Kennedy added they have a couple of graders ready to run in case of a heavy snowfall but they have not been required.

With temperatures struggling to get above freezing today, he said crews would be keeping an eye open for plugged drainage areas on the streets and at key corners. Any build-up of ice would be manually broken up with ice bars.

If anyone spots any issues with this sudden blast Kennedy said crews were ready to respond.

“If they’re in a neighborhood and they feel their street has iced up and it’s dangerous to drive, please call city hall and we’ll send someone out to deal with it,” Kennedy said.

Waseca, between North Battleford and Lloydminster had 18 centimetres of snow Monday. North Battleford was hit with 12 centimetres. Prince Albert saw a total of three centimetres.
