P.A. firefighters go pink

Oct 3, 2018 | 1:46 PM

Prince Albert firefighters are looking to paint the town pink this month.

October is breast cancer awareness month and the department is looking to do its part by wrapping one of their trucks in a pink banner.

Firefighter David MacAuley is helping to spearhead the effort for the firefighters.

“For a $10 donation they can sign the truck, and as you can see, we’ve already got some donations where people have signed their names,” he said.

In past years the department has undertaken similar efforts to raise money and awareness by hanging a pink banner on their ladder truck. This year is the first where an entire truck has been wrapped in a banner.

MacAuley said in the brief time the banner has been on the truck he has already gotten feedback from the community.

“I’ve had people already talk to me that want to come see the truck, they’ve told us how much it means to them, whether they were a breast cancer survivor or they have family, they know somebody,” he said.

People looking to see the pink wrapped truck up close will have a few chances to do so. The truck will be in the parking lot at the Art Hauser Centre before every Raiders home game this month. For those not able to make it out to the rink, the fire department will be hosting an open house at the fire hall on Oct. 8.

To pull off the fundraising and awareness campaign, firefighters have teamed up with the Prince Albert Raiders Hockey Club. Along with letting the truck be on display in the parking lot before home games this month, the team’s logo is displayed on the truck.

Mike Svenson, the corporate sales manager for the team, said the team is in a good position to help with such a campaign as they draw a large number of people from the community to the rink for games.

The Raiders will also be chipping in during the month of October to raise awareness about breast cancer.

“You’ll see a lot of our players wearing pink of some kind, either on their stick, their laces, that kind of thing, so it fits well within the WHL mantra,” Svenson said.
