Mintos new sniper Springer has eyes only for goals

Sep 19, 2018 | 8:10 PM

The game of hockey, the fastest game of earth, means a lot of things to a lot of different people.

For new Prince Albert Minto Dawson Springer, it means one thing — scoring goals.

“It’s my shot and my will to want to score that keeps me going,” Springer said.

His stats show exactly that. Springer scored more goals in the SMAAAHL pre-season than any other player had points. Springer scored seven goals in the pre-season. No other player had more than six total points.

“I like to score. It’s my favourite to do,” said Springer, who also added an assist.

Springer had 35 goals in 36 games last season, good for third in South Sask Midget AA league with the Melville Millionaires.

Opening weekend

The Mintos will open up their season with a pair of home games at the Art Hauser Centre, Saturday against the Moose Jaw Generals and Sunday against the Swift Current Legionnaires. Both games start at 1:30 p.m.

Before Saturday’s game, the Mintos will honour the late Jacob Leicht and the rest of the Humboldt Broncos. That will include a presentation to his parents Celeste and Kurt.

Last season, the Mintos got to the finals but finished as runners up to the eventual Telus Cup champion Notre Dame Hounds.
