All but one of 10 injured in bus, semi collision near Kerrobert out of hospital

Sep 14, 2018 | 10:10 PM

A spokesman for the company that employs 10 workers who were hurt in a crash between a semi-truck and a converted school bus near Kerrobert says all but one have been released from hospital.

Paul Stuckless, corporate safety manager for O.J. Pipelines, says the workers were travelling to Kindersley from a worksite when their bus was struck by a grain truck near Kerrobert Friday evening.

He says 16 workers in the pipe welding crew — including the driver — were on board at the time.

According to RCMP, emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Highways 51, 21 and 31 at 4:26 p.m. Friday after a semi hauling two trailers of canola heading eastbound on Highway 51/21 collided with a converted school bus travelling southeast on Highway 31.

The school bus came to rest on its side in the north ditch and the semi stopped near the centre of Highway 31 facing north.

Ten people on board the bus were taken to hospital. Of them, three were transported to Saskatoon for further treatment by STARS, three were taken to hospitals in Kerrobert and Unity by ground ambulance, and the other four were treated on scene.

The female driver of the bus and the male driver of the semi were not injured, according to police.

A collision reconstructionist did attend the scene and roads were closed until around 5 a.m. Saturday morning while police investigated.

RCMP do not beleive alcohol to be a factor at this point in the investigation, but said “the sequence of events that lead up to and caused the collision are still under investigation.”

A central Alberta man, who witnessed the collision and wanted to stay anonymous, was in the convoy of about six or seven buses and said he was “a little nervous about the bus ride already because we almost hit a few deer on the way.”

“I looked up and there was a semi. It didn’t really look like he was trying to stop but he wasn’t going that fast. He was maybe doing 15 clicks an hour,” the man told Red Deer NewsNOW

The man, who said the crews were on their way back to Kindersley from Luseland for the night, said conditions were clear but overcast.
