SIGA employees give back to West Flat

Sep 6, 2018 | 9:25 AM

Employees from the Northern Lights Casino donated some of their time over the past week to give back to a staple in the West Flat.

The playground and walls of the Bernice Sayese Centre were repainted by staff from the casino, who also hosted a community barbeque Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the local community.

“It’s important for us to be involved with the community, just to give back, because we work at the casino. It’s really important that we share the wealth,” Karen Whitecalf, an operations manager at the casino said. “It feels awesome to see all these people here smiling and eating.”

The day featured activities like a fishing pond, face painting, colouring-book-giveaways, and a free meal.

The activities were part of a Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority initiative started last year called the Day of Sharing. Staff from the SIGA offices and the province’s six casinos spend a day volunteering in an effort to make a difference in their respective communities.

The Bernice Sayese Centre’s Executive Director Dawn Robins said the centre is not just a benefit to the West Flat, but to the entire region around Prince Albert. Many staff bring their families to the centre from out of town, and people from around the region rely on services provided there.

Robins said the centre is lucky to have community support from organizations like the Northern Lights Casino.

“Being the charity of choice with Northern Lights Casino and SIGA has really been a big part of the centre for the last few years,” Robins said. “It’s helped us provide food, provide community gatherings, and also refresh our playgrounds and flooring over the last couple of years and it really brings up our centre.”
