Local church celebrates centennial birthday

Sep 1, 2018 | 8:00 AM

There’s a big celebration going on this weekend in the Rural Municipality of Birch Hills, as the Lake Park Baptist Church marks its 100th anniversary.

The festivities will begin Saturday afternoon with a golf tournament at Birch Hills Golf Course, and there’s a come-and-go tea at the church. Pastor Matthew Teigrob said he is honoured to be a part of the huge milestone.

“It’s just a testament to me that the church has been experiencing God’s faithfulness for 100 years and just to be a part of that and know that’s what God wanted for this community, and I get to be a part of it is quite exciting,” he said.

As other churches across the country face closure or declining attendance, the Lake Park Baptist Church has endured the times. Teigrob said he thought the secret to their success has been staying true to the scriptures.

“We don’t change them to suit the society around us, or the relevant opinion or what people think they want in a church — it’s about what does God want in a church,” he said.

Teigrob said while the overall message has not changed, the method by which he presents the message has changed to keep it relevant to today’s society. Teigrob explained there’s a lot of depression and anxiety in today’s society.

“We don’t try to gloss it over with there’s nothing happening in peoples’ lives and here’s the Bible and here’s what you need to hear. No, it’s about how does the Bible address what you are going through,” he said.

Teigrob said he is looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends this weekend, noting people are traveling from long distances away to attend the anniversary celebration. In addition to the activities Saturday afternoon, there will be evening entertainment starting at 7 p.m. and the Sunday worship service starts at 11 a.m.
