Local food bank hoping to fill shelves for needy families

Aug 16, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The shelves are bare and the local food bank is hoping the community can help feed hungry families in Prince Albert once again.

The Prince Albert Food Bank shared a video on social media this week, hoping to raise awareness about the need for donations over the summer. Donations are generally slower over the summer months, according to Kerry Ramsdell, the operations manager with the food bank.

“This summer, it seems to be that we have more of an influx this year … so we’re emptying a little quicker,” Ramsdell told paNOW.

Those in need can pick up a food hamper once a month. Families can pick up a hamper – filled with non-perishable food items such as canned meat, fruits and vegetables, pasta, beans, soup, tomato sauce, crackers and granola bars. Depending on donations, the hampers can sometimes also include coffee or tea.

Monetary donations can be made to the food bank online through their website. Donations of food can be dropped at their downtown Prince Albert location each morning during the week, or between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Donations of fresh fruits and vegetables from local gardens are also welcome.
