Travelling exhibit looks at traditional ways of the Anishinaabe

Aug 14, 2018 | 5:00 PM

There are just a few days left to take in a travelling exhibit on the traditional foods of the Anishinaabe people at the museum in downtown Prince Albert.

The Prince Albert Historical Society is hosting the exhibit, called Miijim, Lake of the Woods Anishinaabe. The exhibit features information panels about the foods and lifestyles of the Anishinaabe people, including hunting and gathering of berries, fish and rice.

The exhibit came to Prince Albert from the Lake of the Woods Museum in Kenora, Ont. Michelle Taylor, manager and curator with the Prince Albert Historical Society said the exhibit will be available for viewing until the end of August.

“There has been a lot of interest,” Taylor told paNOW. “A lot of them (people) are just really happy to see something different, and a different perspective on things.”

It’s only the second time the museum has hosted a travelling exhibit in Prince Albert. Taylor said the exhibit reflects traditional ways of life on the land, adding that the museum is working to include more indigenous content in its local exhibits. The museum has been talking with local Indigenous groups to develop new content and will be starting renovations in the fall in the Connaught Room to make room for new exhibits with an Indigenous focus.

“We want to better reflect the people who are here and tell the stories of the people who make up Prince Albert,” she added.

Admission to the museum is $4 for adults and family and day passes are available as well.
