Trial scheduled in case involving former Montreal Lake band manager

A former staff member with the Montreal Lake Cree Nation will stand trial on a charge of common assault after a plan to settle the case through alternative measures fell through.
Mark Anthony D’Amato is scheduled to stand trial on the single count later this year at Prince Albert Provincial Court. A former band manager for the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, D’Amato is charged with assaulting a councillor in an alleged incident from January. His case was referred to the alternative measures program in April, which is meant to give those accused of committing a crime the chance to make amends for their actions to their victims and the community. The process can include making an apology, paying restitution, donating to charity or community service work.
The court heard Thursday that D’Amato’s case could not be worked out using alternative measures. His trial on the assault charge is now scheduled for November 7 and 8.
The allegations against D’Amato have not been proven in court.
