The softball nationals season has started, and three Prince Albert products are right in the middle of it.

At the 2018 Under-23 Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship in Saint-Léonard-d’Aston, Que., Nick Basaraba, Nick Patrick, and Matthew Kutnikoff are all playing on the Saskatoon Diamondbacks, who are 2-1 so far in the tournament.

The Diamondbacks beat the Tavistock Hops from Ontario 2-1 Wednesday. Patrick picked up the win, pitching all seven innings, striking out 10 batters while surrendering one run and two hits.

On opening day, the Diamondbacks split their two games with a 4-1 loss to Ontario’s Cobourg Bulls and a 2-1 victory over the hosts Express Saint-Léonard-d’Aston.

Basaraba scored the D-Backs’ lone run against the Bulls, also hitting a triple in the game. L’Express feature Isaac Lefebvre, who was in Prince Albert two weeks ago with Team Canada at the XII WBSC Junior Men’s Softball World Championship.

The Diamondbacks have four more games to play before the playoffs start on the weekend, facing the Owen Sound Selects and the Newfoundland Junior Canadians Thursday, and the East Hants Mastodons from Nova Scotia and the P.E.I Ravens Friday.
