Light horse show thrills crowd at Summer Fair

Aug 1, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Months and months of hard work was displayed Wednesday, as part of the annual 4-H light horse show at the Prince Albert Exhibition and Summer Fair.

4-H clubs from across the district competed at the event including Red River, Holbein and Prince Albert, and the ages of the athletes ranged from six to 21 years old. Monica Kuzniar, seven, lives in the MacDowall area and said she thought her horse would impress the judges.

“He’s had a lot of time being good and he’s good at jumping,” she said.

Jacy Gitzel from the Holbein area was keeping a close eye on her eight-year-old daughter Janaya.

“These kids with 4-H do it all themselves, there’s no help from mom or dad,” she said. “She was up with me at six this morning, mucking out the stall and hauling water and hay so they are committed,” she said.

B.J. Wolfe was tasked with judging the competition. A parent and former 4-H member herself she said she could appreciate the hard work the kids contributed.

“This is an all summer job for these kids so it’s not like go catch your horse in the pasture one day and take it to the fair,” she said.

The light horse show was divided up into showmanship as well as riding events. The youth in the showmanship category were judged based on how clean their horse looks as well as their ability to handle and present the horse.

“I love to see the little kids out here because that’s the future of the 4-H program and the future of the horse show industry itself,” Wolfe said.
