Provincial departments collaborate to reduce impaired driving rates

The provincial government is piloting five new projects aimed at reducing Saskatchewan’s impaired driving rates as part of a new, collaborative approach to the issue.

The projects include new messaging on the dangers of impaired driving from the Ministry of Corrections and Policing, a project by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority to add drawings by children to brown liquor store bags, and SGI’s “positive ticketing” campaign, which rewards young drivers for showing good behaviours behind the wheel.

The initiatives also include new questions on liquor permit applications designed to encourage people to find safe rides, and a project by Innovation Saskatchewan asking bar patrons if they would like to put money towards a “tab” for a designated driving service where the funds are matched by the province.

“Saskatchewan has a problem with impaired driving,” Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan Tina Beaudry-Mellor said in a statement. “It’s important we approach this issue with all the tools at our disposal, because even one death or injury from impaired driving is too many.”
