P.A. National Park promotes safe wildlife viewing

Jul 27, 2018 | 12:00 PM

It’s always exciting to see wildlife in national parks, but it’s important not to disturb animals for the sake of a selfie.

That’s the message being promoted by staff at Prince Albert National Park, who are supporting the #SafeSelfies and #KeepWildlifeWild campaigns on social media in an effort to ensure park visitors don’t disturb or endanger animals during their visits. Deer, elk, red foxes, bears, and coyotes are all commonly seen around the park, but it’s important not to get too close.

“We love animals and we want to protect them,” Interpretation Officer Lauren Markewicz said in a statement. “I think that’s something that all visitors have in common. We want to appreciate the opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitat.”

According to park staff, if you notice an animal lifting their head to look at you, that’s a sign you’re too close and should back away. Photographers were encouraged to invest in a zoom lens or use digi-scoping technology to take close-up shots without disturbing any animals. Park visitors were also encouraged to help promote safe wildlife viewing by sharing their photos from the park along with the hashtags on social media.
