Canada beats the Argentines, advances to rematch against N.Z.

Team Canada is now one win away from a guaranteed medal at the XII WBSC Junior Men’s Softball World Championship.

Canada defeated Argentina 6-4 Saturday afternoon to advance to the 8 p.m. game at Rotary Field against Team New Zealand. The winner of that will at least end up with the bronze medal.

After their bats ran cold on Friday night in a 2-0 loss to Australia, Canada was able to reheat them in the second inning. Down 1-0, Canadian left fielder Noah Baker did what Canada couldn’t do on Friday, get that clutch base hit with two runners on base in a two-out situation. Baker poked one up the middle for an RBI double, bringing in Brendan Hagerman. Mac Fischer later scored on a wild pitch.

Dallas Kipfer hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to give Canada a 5-1 lead. Argentina was able to battle back late and put pressure on Canada, but David Watson came in and pitched a strong inning-and-two-thirds to close out the game.
