Alcohol tariff situation still fluid for SLGA

With the federal government implementing tariffs on goods like American whiskey, the provincial regulator is awaiting reaction from suppliers before any changes in price will be made.
The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority’s wholesale prices are determined by a number of different factors, according to spokesperson David Morris. Provincial markups, taxes, tariffs, and the base price of a bottle all determine the final cost.
“In this situation, if a manufacturer changes their base price to absorb that new tariff, then the wholesale price is not going to change,” Morris said. “If a manufacturer keeps their base price … then the wholesale price will increase and consumers will likely notice a different price.”
Morris said it’s still too early to say how the federally-imposed tariff on American whiskey will impact consumers in Saskatchewan. He said American whiskey accounts for roughly one percent of all alcohol sales in the province.
