RCMP have confirmed a 71-year-old woman and a family of five were killed in a head-on crash Friday night on Highway 4 near Elrose.

Mounties responded to the call about two SUVs colliding around 4:35 p.m. When officers arrived, both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

All six people involved in the crash were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and lone occupant of the one SUV was a 71-year-old woman from the Swift Current area.

The five people in the other SUV included a 26-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman and three children ages six, four and two. They were all from the Rosetown area.

The two RCMP traffic reconstructionists who responded to the scene are still completing their reports regarding what caused the collision.

“It does take time for them to figure out exactly what happened. Right now, they’re in the evidence gathering (stage) and it’s going to take time for them to determine what exactly happened to the best of their abilities,” Cpl. Rob King told reporters Saturday afternoon.

Highway 4 in both directions was blocked for several hours Friday night. It was reopened to traffic around 1 a.m. Saturday.
