RCMP and Canadian Rangers locate missing boaters

Fond Du Lac RCMP helped locate two missing boaters after a massive search effort.

Two boaters from Uranium City set out on Lake Athabasca June 9, headed towards Fort Chipewyan. Community members expressed concerns to police about the boaters, saying they may have been unprepared for the arduous journey.

After a search spanning some 500 kilometres, the boaters were located June 11 near the Alberta border by Civil Air Search and Rescue members who arrived to help in search efforts. A member of the Canadian Rangers and RCMP officers later rescued the pair.

“Without assistance from [the Canadian Rangers] the RCMP would not have been able to travel safely across Lake Athabasca,” the RCMP said in a statement. “The Rangers are a very valuable resource and their help in situations like this is greatly appreciated.”
