Local Christian youth camp reaches initial fundraising goal

Just days after putting out a public plea for support, The Quest at Christopher Lake has reached its initial fundraising goal.

The popular Christian youth camp north of Prince Albert has managed to raise more than $25,000 since last Friday. The camp’s board had set June 8 as the deadline to raise $20,000 for operations, or it would be forced to cancel all summer camps for 2018.

Emily Summach, the camp’s interim managing director says she’s ecstatic to see the camp reach its initial fundraising goal.

“There’s a lot of excitement around,” she told paNOW. “I’ve been so unsure for a while if it was going to happen or not, but now that it is, I am so grateful … we’re going forward with summer.”

Summach said the camp received a lot of calls from concerned parents in recent days, wondering whether the camp would continue. She said staff are relieved to know the summer camp will still go ahead and parents were notified as well.

“I’m hoping that there’s just a big sigh of relief for all of our parents and for all of our staff, yeah I’m pumped, I’m really excited that we can just go forward and it just feels like a weight is off and we’re ready to go,” she said.

The Quest will continue to fundraise with the hope of raising $40,000 before the end of July. The Canadian Baptists of Western Canada has agreed to match all donations up to $40,000.

Summach told paNOW last week that 300 campers have registered to attend the camp, and 40 summer staff have been hired. She said a decline in donations throughout the year and the end of several rental agreements hurt the non-profit camp financially.
