Local man receives Medal of Bravery

Jun 5, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A Prince Albert man was recognized with a Governor General’s award for his efforts to rescue a man trapped inside a burning vehicle in 2013.

Ronald Minter received The Medal of Bravery from Governor General Julie Payette at a ceremony in Ottawa earlier today. Minter was recognized along with RCMP Constable Elmer Russell for their efforts to rescue the man, who became trapped inside a burning SUV after it rolled off an overpass in Saskatoon May 31, 2013. Crawling through a broken side window of the vehicle, Minter and Russell were able to free the man from his seatbelt as he hung upside down inside the vehicle, and pull him to safety.

Minter, who lives in Prince Albert and works as an advanced care paramedic in North Battleford, said he and his family were driving back from a sporting event when the accident happened five years ago. At the time, Minter was working in Saskatoon as a correctional officer and a firefighter in Warman.

“Adrenaline kind of kicks in and it just all, it was a blur really. I just was glad we were able to pull the person out,” Minter told paNOW.
