Raider alum Viveiros joins Oilers staff

May 25, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Prince Albert Raider legend Manny Viveiros has been hired as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers.

Following a two-season run with the Swift Current Broncos that culminated in the team’s third WHL championship this spring, Viveiros will join Trent Yawney and Glen Gulutzan as new assistants on Todd McClellan’s staff.

“My time here in the last two years in Swift Current is one of the most memorable times of my career,” Viveiros said at a Friday morning press conference. “I’d like to thank the Bronco organization for taking a chance on me two seasons ago, coming back from Europe. It wasn’t easy to get back to North American circles as far as hockey, and they took a chance on me and entrusted me with an opportunity here in Swift Current.”

A native of St. Albert, Alberta, Viveiros joined the Raiders as a 16-year-old defenceman in the 1982-83 season. Over four seasons in northern Saskatchewan, Viveiros registered 265 assists and 321 points in 251 regular season games. Although his Raider career ended over 30 years ago, the newest Oiler assistant still covers the franchise record book when it comes to defencemen. Viveiros is the all-time leader in points, assists, and goals by a defenceman in a career, as well as points and assists by a defenceman in a single season.

Viveiros was a key part of the 1984-85 Raiders who earned the only WHL and Memorial Cup titles in franchise history.

Following his time in Prince Albert, Viveiros spent three seasons with the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars before heading overseas. He spent 16 seasons playing in Austria and two in Germany before moving on to the coaching ranks.

“I’m certainly looking forward to new challenges going forward, but my heart is always going to be here in Swift Current,” Viveiros said.

At the end of Friday morning’s conference, Bronco Board Chair Trent McLeary said the search for the team’s new head coach will begin immediately.
