Rifles stolen, shots fired at property owner near Debden: RCMP

May 25, 2018 | 10:16 AM

A break-in and firearm theft from a rural property south of Debden led to gunfire and a police chase after the property owner confronted the suspects.

RCMP said the property owner encountered at least two suspects stealing two long-barreled rifles from his property around midnight on Thursday. The homeowner attempted to pursue the fleeing suspects in his own vehicle, RCMP said, but he abandoned the chase after a number of shots were fired in his direction.

Officers from the Big River detachment located the suspect vehicle and pursued, but they were unable to stop the vehicle and lost contact with it.

The suspects’ vehicle was a black Dodge four-door pickup truck, RCMP said, with damage to the rear tailgate, driver’s side taillight and a broken rear window. The suspects should not be approached, RCMP said, and anyone who spots the vehicle should report the sighting directly to police or Crime Stoppers.
