Midtown Community Club Courts restored and revamped

May 24, 2018 | 4:03 PM

The City of Prince Albert cut the ribbon on the newly restored Midtown Community Club Courts on Thursday.

What were three non-regulation tennis courts with deteriorating asphalt have been replaced with two regulation tennis courts and a basketball court.

The tennis courts can also serve as pickleball courts, as they include painted lines and adjustable net heights suitable for each sport.

That’s especially exciting for Mary Ruth Amundson, an avid pickleball fan and player.

“This is so nice. We’ve already played twice on these courts this year, it’s awesome,” Amundson said. “They’ve got adjustable nets, so it brings it down to pickleball height — 34 inches in the centre. This is going to be a great place for people to come out from all over the city and around the city to play outdoors.”

Mayor Greg Dionne said it was even more important to restore the tennis courts, after the city closed the courts near the Art Hauser Centre in favour of the gym expansion at Carlton Comprehensive High School.

“At that time, we committed to build new tennis courts but that never happened. So when [councillor Dennis Nowoselsky] brought this in, it was a great opportunity because we were lacking those ones. We all got on board and supported it,” he said.

The restoration project cost $170,000 and was funded through the Community Services Land Fund Reserve.
