RCMP identify body found in burnt car, confirming mother’s suspicions

The Saskatchewan RCMP have identified the body found in a burnt out car on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation May 10.

Police confirmed the body was that of 20-year-old Brennan Ahenakew, who lived in the community. An autopsy was done Tuesday in Saskatoon.

Ahenakew’s mother Lisa Johnstone spoke to paNOW Tuesday and said she hopes someone who knows what happened to her son comes forward. Ahenakew said he was going to the gravel pits to hang out with his friends the night before his remains were found, Johnstone said, and the family has since started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money to offer as a reward for information.

RCMP Cpl. Rob King said the fundraising campaign does not hinder or help the investigation as Crime Stoppers also provides money for tips that assist an investigation. Meanwhile, the RCMP investigation continues into Ahenakew’s death, and police have asked anyone with information on the case to contact them directly.
