Botha ‘ready to move forward’ after sanctions for online comments

May 8, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Prince Albert City Councillor for Ward 3 Evert Botha says he is ready to “move forward” in light of the decision made at Monday night’s city council meeting to sanction him.

The penalties came after he made what are described as “inappropriate, disrespectful and derogatory” comments on social media during a Prince Albert Raiders game.

Council voted 6-1 to impose penalties, with only Ward 2 Coun. Terra Lennox-Zepp opposed. Botha and Ward 5 Coun. Dennis Ogrodnick were out of the room during the vote due to a conflict of interest.

The comments were provided to paNOW on the condition they not be republished.

Botha will soon be removed from all boards, committees, and official bodies, and will lose his right to speak as a representative of council at public events for one year. He will also have to make a public apology for his comments to the Prince Albert Raiders Hockey Club, City Council and the public on social media for three weeks in a form and wording approved by council.

The move comes after Botha’s potential violation of the Code of Ethics Bylaw was reported to the executive committee April 9.

In a written statement to paNOW, Botha said he will  “continue to serve the constituents of Ward 3 and represent them to the best of my ability, along with the residents and businesses” in the city.

“There are several causes that have become very important to me to which I remain steadfast in my commitment,” he wrote.

In the coming weeks, Botha wrote he will issue a formal apology and commit himself to “working towards reconciliation with my fellow member of Council, and Council as a whole.”
