Raiders select Nolan Allan third overall

May 3, 2018 | 9:29 AM

With their third overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, the Prince Albert Raiders selected defenceman Nolan Allan from Davidson, Sask.

As a member of the Humbolt Bantam AA Broncos, Allan skated in 26 regular season games this season, scoring 12 goals and 32 assists, and a further three points in the postseason.

“Nolan checks all the boxes. He’s a local guy and we think he’s going to round out to be a very good WHL defenceman,” said Ron Gunville, the Raiders’ director of player personnel. “His skating ability and ability to join in the rush and create offense [is impressive]. He also has great size.”

The Raiders’ pick originally belonged to the Prince George Cougars, but was acquired by Prince Albert in a 2016 trade involving former defenceman Brendan Guhle. The Raiders’ own first-round pick belongs, coincidentally, to the Cougars, acquired in the early-2018 trade that also saw Rhett Rhinehart and Austin Crossley moved to Prince George in exchange for Kody McDonald and a conditional pick.

Prior to the third overall pick, the Edmonton Oil Kings selected centre Dylan Guenther, an Edmonton native, first overall and the Kootenay ICE selected defenceman Carson Lambos from Winnipeg with the second pick of the draft.

Prince Albert’s Klassen becomes a Winterhawk

At 19th overall, Prince Albert native Gabe Klassen was selected by the Portland Winterhawks following an 89-point campaign with the Bantam AA Venice House Pirates. Klassen finished first in scoring across the entire Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League.

Second round update

Another Venice House Pirate graduate, Prince Albert defenceman Marek Schneider, was taken with the eighth pick of the second round, 30th overall, by the Saskatoon Blades. One pick later, the Raiders were at the podium to draft Lloydminster native Tyson Laventure, a right winger from the OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep program.

Draft day continues as the Raiders hold at least one pick in each round moving forward. We’ll bring you updates throughout the draft.
