Nicole Rancourt elected NDP deputy caucus chair

The new Saskatchewan NDP leader has made a few tweaks to his shadow cabinet, though Ryan Meili largely maintained the status quo among those who serve in their roles as critic.

Prince Albert Northcote MLA Nicole Rancourt will see a few changes to her portfolios. Most significantly, Rancourt was elected to serve as Deputy Caucus Chair. In a release, Rancourt said the move “means a lot to me to have this strong show of support from my caucus colleagues.” Rancourt will retain her role as municipal relations critic and will take on the role of critic for labour relations and workplace safety, the workers’ compensation board, and SaskEnergy.

“I look forward to continuing in my role as Critic for Municipal Relations, and to continue working with municipal leaders throughout the province who have been forced by the Sask. Party’s cuts to raise taxes and fees in their communities,” she added in the release.

Meili also shifted the social services file from Rancourt to Trent Wotherspoon, whom he defeated in the party’s leadership race. The Regina Rosemont MLA will also serve as critic for advanced education, the associate critic for the education and economy portfolios, and chair of public accounts.

Most other critic roles served by those under former interim leader Nicole Saruer, who is taking care of justice, corrections and policing, the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and act as the NDP House leader, will remain the same.

While serving as leader, Meili will also act as the critic for executive council, the premier’s office, intergovernmental affairs and Francophone affairs.

A flurry of change has overtaken Saskatchewan politics in the past two months. When the legislative sitting resumes this week in Regina, the province will have its first chance to see both new leaders and their caucuses at work.
