March snowfall dumps motoring woes on city

Mar 5, 2018 | 8:38 AM

A major weekend snowstorm has dumped a whole lot of problems on Prince Albert motorists.

City crews started plowing long before dawn Monday, but many residents still woke up with no way to get their vehicles out of driveways, through back alleys, or simply down the street. paNOW heard from motorists who needed more than an hour to make what would normally be a fifteen-minute commute across the city. According to Prince Albert Roadways Manager Brent Kennedy, residential streets will be left alone until at least the afternoon, as crews focus on clearing main routes.

“We won’t be moving into residential areas until we can do the main arterials,” Kennedy told paNOW. “If you’re [parked] on a snow route, you have to move your vehicle otherwise it may be towed or ticketed.”

Kennedy said the city understands the difficulties some residents may have in getting their vehicle moving, and noted the city will be accommodating.

“This would be the worst we’ve seen for a few years,” Kennedy said.

Sask. Rivers Public school buses were cancelled today, along with First Student rural services and others. At least two schools were closed in rural areas.

Parkland Ambulance Spokesperson Lyle Karasiuk said paramedics have not received any weather-related calls this morning, but encouraged all drivers to take their time.

“Slow down,” Karasiuk said. “Please be patient if you do see an emergency vehicle trying to get through, and remember it’s just as tough for our crews to drive in these conditions.”

This early-March motherlode of snow isn’t done quite yet. Environment Canada issued another snowfall warning Monday, warning of up to 20 more centimetres.
