Sask. Winter Games: Rivers West win 8 medals in alpine ski-cross

Feb 20, 2018 | 8:03 PM

Although a total of 18 medals were up for grabs in alpine skiing on day two of the Saskatchewan Winter Games, 19 medals were awarded in the end, due to a tie for the bronze in the U-16 male ski-cross.

Of the 19 that were awarded, Rivers West won an impressive eight, with three gold, three silver, and two bronze.

Lakeland and Regina each won three medals, Saskatoon and Prairie Central each won two, and South East won one.

After winning gold on Monday for Rivers West in the U-16 female slalom with a combined time of 1:18.74, Nadine Fehr repeated that success on Tuesday with yet another gold, this time in the U-16 female ski-cross.

The 15-year-old has now won five gold medals at the Winter Games, as she competed (and thrived) at the last Winter Games in Prince Albert.

“[Last Winter Games] were a lot of fun and came out with the same results, so it’s cool to do it again,” Fehr said after Tuesday’s medal ceremony.

Fehr grew up on a farm near Herschel and was first put on skis at two-years-old.

Because of that, she’s not the only Fehr to find success in alpine skiing.

Her younger brohers Jacob (12) and Cailean (10) also won medals on Tuesday, with Jacob winning gold and Cailean winning bronze in the U-12 boys ski-cross. Jacob also won gold on Monday in the U-12 male slalom, while Cailean finished just off the podium, coming in fourth.

“We had a little hill right near our house,” Nadine said when asked why she was put on skis at such an early age. “So our parents took us out all the time and we worked at it.”

Fehr, who looks up to professional skiiers such as Canadian Candace Crawford and American Mikaela Shiffron, said the key to her success has been a relaxed and positive attitude.

“Just keep working at it and don’t get down on yourself,” she said when asked how she was able to come out on top. “[When] you stay loose and you just have fun, you don’t get down on yourself and you’re able to pick yourself back up and keep going.”

Also winning medals for Rivers West on Tuesday were Allison Wawryk, who won gold in the U-14 female ski-cross, Harley Harris, who won silver in the U-16 female ski-cross, Ashton Brebner, who won gold in the U-16 male ski-cross, Brook Mack, who won silver in the U-12 female ski-cross, and Matthew Spanier who tied for bronze in the U-16 male ski-cross.

For Brebner, Harris, and Mack, it was the second medal of the competition.

Brebner won gold in the U-16 male slalom on Monday, Harris won silver in the U-16 female slalom, and Mack won gold in the U-12 female slalom.

Winning medals for Lakeland in the ski-cross on Tuesday were Sierra Keith (gold, U-12 female), Jaylyn Marsh (silver, U-14 female), and Ashton Bourgeois (tied for bronze, U-16 male).

Winning medals for Regina on Tuesday were Carson Ritter (gold, U-14 male), Sam Silverthorn (bronze, U-16 female), and Allie Silverthorn (bronze, U-12 female).

The remaining medals went to Prairie Central’s Aiden Ohryn (gold, U-16 male), Saskatoon’s Cole and Camryn Krushelniski (silver, U-12 male, and bronze, U-14 female), South East’s Sam Penkala (silver, U-14 male), and Prairie Central’s Lincoln LaMontagne (bronze, U-14 male).

The final alpine skiing competition gets underway at 1 p.m. on Wednesday with ski-cross team mixed, once again at Table Mountain.

In two days of alpine skiing races, Rivers West has won a total of 16 medals.
