A 21-year-old man from Pelican Narrows has been given an eight-year sentence for manslaughter after a back door fight became deadly.

Brett Napoleon Michel was initially charged with the second degree murder of 19-year-old Jordan Bedard from Sandy Bay in July 2016. Michel pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Court documents show the two men had been drinking with another friend. Laughter and jokes escalated into a consentual fight near the back door of the kitchen.

During the fight Michel grabbed a small dumbbell weight bar and used it to hit Bedard on the base of the skull.

Bedard was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A pathologist report showed Bedard had died of blunt force trauma.

As part of the RCMP investigation a dumbbell was found in a crawlspace at Michel’s home. It had hairs on one end but they were insufficient for DNA analysis.

Michel has already served 867 days in custody which will be deducted from the eight-year sentence.
