Pelican Narrows man sentenced after dumbbell killing

Feb 9, 2018 | 1:00 PM

A 21-year-old man from Pelican Narrows has been given an eight-year sentence for manslaughter after a back door fight became deadly.

Brett Napoleon Michel was initially charged with the second degree murder of 19-year-old Jordan Bedard from Sandy Bay in July 2016. Michel pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Court documents show the two men had been drinking with another friend. Laughter and jokes escalated into a consentual fight near the back door of the kitchen.

During the fight Michel grabbed a small dumbbell weight bar and used it to hit Bedard on the base of the skull.
