Fond du Lac Chief calls-out feds

The Chief of the Fond du Lac Denesuline Nation said the federal government is shirking its responsibility to First Nations.

Chief Louie Mercredi met with officials from the federal government regarding a longer runway and an all-weather road in the northern community following last month’s plane crash. According to a release from the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN), he was told he would have to meet with the province to discuss these issues.

“A nation-to-nation relationship necessitates a defined consultation process with First Nations; not a First Nation submitting applications to the province,” Mercredi said.

FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear said the issue was consultation. She said the federal government has a mandate to deal with infrastructure concerns brought to them by Indigenous communities. She asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address the concerns raised by Mercredi on behalf of the people of Fond du Lac.
