Carlton Guy’s Club gives gifts of winter wear to YWCA

Jersey Mcadam was humble but proud as he lugged bags full of socks and mittens into the YWCA Our House shelter.

He was just one of nearly a dozen boys from the Carlton Comprehensive Public High School Guy’s Club who participated in the “Saders’ Socks for the Soul” program, collecting funds and buying much needed winter wear for those in need throughout the city.

“Especially over Christmas time, a lot of people need socks and gloves so it meant a lot,” the fourteen-year-old Grade 9 student said when asked what giving back meant to him. “A lot of people need clothing items.”

The Guy’s Club was a group founded by a number of educators and police officers this fall, to help the young men learn what it means to be a gentlemen, find their passion and to connect them with the right people and positive male role models.

Composed of Grade 9 to 12 students, the group collected over $700 and ventured over to Ted Matheson Menswear to buy 100 pairs of socks. But with some cash remaining, the team took an additional trip to a department store and snatched up some mittens for the shelter.

CEO Donna Brooks was elated to see the young men give back.

“It is amazing. Good on them that they have this group and are giving back. Thats just terrific,” she said.

Brooks welcomed the donation, making note that while they receive ample donation of clothing, sometimes and socks and underwear are left out.

“We can really use these,” she added.

An organizer with the group said the Guy’s Club has plans to continue the giving initiative into the new year and work with the community to find other places the young men can help out and give back.
