Wheelchair basketball club starts GoFundMe in wake of theft

A Saskatoon kids’ sports team is scrambling to raise funds after a disappointing theft.

The NRG Wheelchair Basketball Club, which includes kids between 6 and 16, had a trailer containing all its equipment stolen over the weekend of July 28-30, including 34 specialized wheelchairs valued at around $4,000 each.

Speaking to 650 CKOM on Tuesday, Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sport Association CEO Andrea Muir estimated the total loss at around $250,000.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, a page on the GoFundMe crowdfunding platform had raised about $425 of a $150,000 goal.

The GoFundMe campaign was launched by NRG team coach Joelle Buckle.

She wrote that while the team had insurance, they weren’t sure if all their losses would be covered, or how long it might take to receive a payout.

The team’s season is due to start in September.

Buckle wrote that any money raised would go towards additional wheelchairs and program costs.
