Accused child-abductor back in court

Jul 28, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The man accused of triggering an Amber Alert earlier this month when he allegedly abducted an eight-year-old girl from a Prince Albert playground was back in court this morning.

A massive province-wide manhunt followed news of the abduction July 5, and lasted several hours before the missing girl wandered onto an acreage outside of the city and was recognized by the property owner. Police said their suspect, 19-year-old Jarrod John Charles, was arrested at a Prince Albert business later in the same night.

Charles made his appearance in provincial court over a video link from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre. He wore the baggy grey-and-green inmate uniform and glasses. His wild, shaggy hair stood up in all directions.

The young man is facing a raft of serious criminal charges, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, abduction of a person under age 14, abandoning a child, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, committing an indictable offence while breaking and entering, and breaching probation. Although he was initially charged with sexual assault, that count was upgraded to aggravated sexual assault during a recent court date.
