The Big Top comes to P.A.

Jun 23, 2017 | 12:00 PM

The red and yellow tent looks impressive from afar, and what goes on inside promises to be even better.

From high-flying acrobatics to motorcycles in the Globe of Death, this weekend’s Royal Canadian Family Circus SPECTAC! at the Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds is sure to wow audiences, according to Ring Master John Kennedy Kane.

“This year’s circus is focused on being a thrill circus with lots of daredevils in the show,” the ninth generation performer said.

Coming to Canada for the first time are the Duo Guerrero High Wire Act. This male-female duo was featured on America’s Got Talent and flip the traditional roles on its head, with the female performer taking on the heavy lifting.

“I have been in the circus myself over 35 years and have never seen an act like this,” Kane said.

Alongside this, the show includes a global cast with the Aerial Motor Cycle Cyclone trio from South America, an Acrobatic Strap and Silk act from Peru, Super Poodles from Mexico for the kids, a comedy act from Columbia, clowns and plenty more.

Kane’s favourite performer was the Human Spider. He said the man performs at the very top of the tent and is able to walk upside down across the tent before he disappears.

He added how the circus was all about giving children and adults alike a glimpse inside the traditional world of performance.

“Kids are all into their video games and this is kind of a pure form of entertainment,” Kane said. “I think a lot of people are kind of surprised when they come to the show, I don’t know how many kids have seen live entertainment up close.”

This is the first year the circus is touring without exotic animals. Though Kane missed the animals, he found the show was just as good.

“You go with what the public wants to see and it has worked for us,” he said. “The great part anyway is the cotton candy, and popcorn, and peanuts. We have all that plus circus souvenirs and lots of other fun also.”

The performance under the big top will take place at 12 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday as well as 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets can be found online or at the box office on site between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on performance days.
