Wet weather delays northern planting

Jun 8, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Saskatchewan producers have 81 per cent of the 2017 crops planted, on par with the five-year average for this time of year, which is 82 per cent.

Wet fields have delayed progress in the North – producers will need a few more weeks of warm and dry weather.

A slow moving weather system brought significant rainfall to areas of the North in the last week. Sixty-five millimetres of water fell around the Nipawin area, where many other regions did not receive any rainfall.

Fields in the North remain very wet, while many fields in other regions are in need of rain to aid in germination.

Seeding is furthest ahead in the southeast, with producers having 95 per cent of crops planted. Ninety-four per cent of planting is complete in the southwest; 80 per cent in the west-central region; 79 per cent in the east-central region; 76 per cent in the northwest and only 43 per cent in the northeast.

Producers have 95 per cent of durum, 91 per cent of soy, 81 per cent of spring wheat, 80 per cent of flax, 78 per cent of mustard, 76 per cent of canola and 73 per cent of barley in the ground.
