No bail for accused in Big River First Nation hit-and-run

May 9, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The Big River man accused of running down five children while driving impaired was denied bail this morning by a Prince Albert judge.

Colt Levi Morin, 20, was charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm along with numerous other charges after allegedly hitting the children while they were walking home from soccer on the Big River First Nation, April 9. All five youth were hurt in the collision and the most severely injured – an 11-year-old girl – was airlifted to Saskatoon by STARS where she underwent surgery.

Morin’s bail hearing was held Friday, but Judge Earl Kalenith said he wanted time to consider his decision.

This morning Kalenith acknowledged Morin has strong family support in the community, but that was not enough to convince him the accused would not reoffend or present a risk to public safety if released. Morin’s ongoing issues with alcohol factored into his decision, Kalenith said.
