GRAPHIC PHOTO: Conservation group seeks leads in suspected moose poaching

May 1, 2017 | 12:02 PM

A shocking photo circulating online has drawn attention to Saskatchewan’s poaching problem.

The SaskTip charity group posted a photo Sunday showing a moose cow and calf that were reportedly left to rot on private land about 10 km southeast of Alvena.

The post states that only the hind quarters and fleshy part of the nose were taken off the cow moose carcass.  The calf was apparently cut out of the cow’s body and did not survive

Evidence at the scene reportedly suggested that the suspects’ vehicle got stuck in the same field.

Two men were reportedly approaching landowners in the area that afternoon for help with a stuck truck.

They were described as First Nations men in their late 30s.

While the two aren’t confirmed as suspects in the poaching incident, the timing of their truck getting stuck and the evidence of a vehicle apparently stuck near where the carcasses was found lead SaskTip to report that they may be persons of interest to authorities.

Anyone with information on this or any other poaching incident was asked to call the province’s toll-free Turn in a Poacher or report online.

SaskTip is a registered charity that maintains a reward fund to help catch suspected poachers, similar to the well-known CrimeStoppers program that encourages people to report criminal offences.

This post on the SaskTip Facebook page was shared over 4,000 times since it was posted Sunday.
